The People of the Upper Skeena

The Upper Skeena Region, also known as the Hazeltons, is situated in the northwestern area of British Columbia, Canada. The Upper Skeena is home to approximately 7,600 people who live in 9 communities spread throughout the region. These communities range from small municipalities to unincorporated rural areas to First Nation villages. The majority of the population is of Gitxsan or Wet'suwet'en heritage. Most of the remaining population is from a Western European background.

The Upper Skeena region lies within the traditional territory of the Gitxsan First Nation, which covers an area of 30,000 square kilometres. The Gitxsan traditional hereditary system is active and influential in the social, economic and political affairs of the region.

The Upper Skeena has a very stable population despite periodic down turns in the local economy due to the changes in the forestry industry. Over 50% of the region's population is made up of people between the ages of 15 and 30. This is in contrast to provincial and national populations which tend to be aging.
