Skeena Main List || People || Geography || Economy || Map || ServicesThe Geography of the Upper SkeenaThe Upper Skeena Region boasts rugged snow capped mountains and fish filled rivers. Forests of fir, spruce, hemlock and cedar cover most of the region. The Babine, Bulkley, Kispiox and Skeena Rivers, which all flow into or through the Upper Skeena region, are home to abundant salmon and steelhead populations. These runs support commercial, traditional food and sport fisheries. The mountainous terrain creates ideal conditions for recreation. Canoing, kayaking and rafting are popular sports in the region and are increasingly becoming the basis for small business in the adventure tourism sector. The region is bisected by the Yellowhead Trans Canada Highway 16 and lies approximately 250 km (150 miles) east of Prince Rupert on the British Columbia coast. At Gitwangak, approximately 50 km west of New Hazelton, the Stewart Cassiar Highway 37 heads northward to the Yukon and Alaska. Connections can be made with the British Columbia and Alaska State Ferry systems in Prince Rupert. Connections by air can be made either in Smithers or Terrace. New Hazelton is a scheduled stop for Greyhound Bus Lines and a flag stop for Via Rail. Upper Skeena Development Centre, uheuberger@usdc.bc.ca
